State College, PA -- Wednesday evening, Patton Township unanimously adopted a resolution to transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2050, making it the 2nd municipality in Centre County and 42nd in Pennsylvania to make such a commitment.

Patton Township joins 41 communities across Pennsylvania that have passed similar resolutions pledging to transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. It is also one of over 180 cities that have adopted this goal nationally.

Patton Township’s resolution pledges support for the Centre Region’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which was adopted by the Centre Region Council of Governments in November 2021, and further commits to transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2050 or before. It also states that Patton Township will engage local non-profit, commercial, and educational partners in both raising awareness of climate change and working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the interim goals established in the CAAP.

Betsy Whitman, Patton Township Supervisor, and sponsor of the resolution issued the following statement:

“This week we passed an historic commitment to tackle climate change and transition to a 100 percent clean energy future. We have been working with our Centre Region municipal partners, technical advisors, engaged citizens, and the sustainability planner of the Centre Region Planning Agency to develop the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. We believe this plan is thorough and detailed enough to make our Patton Township resolution actionable. We’re particularly proud of the emphasis we have placed on green jobs and economic development as well as providing tangible benefits to low-income residents and others who have historically been disadvantaged by fossil fuel-based energy systems.”

Ellen Foreman, Sierra Club Moshannon Group’s Ready For 100 Team, issued the following:

“It has truly been a privilege for our team to work with local leaders as Patton Township joins the growing list of other municipalities and counties in Pennsylvania and across the country committed to a sustainable future. We are energized by this and the other resolutions in the Centre Region and will continue to work together to find and implement solutions that will enable the transition to clean energy creating a healthy, vibrant future for generations to come.”
