Delta Sierra Group General Membership Meetings: Pre and Post Covid: 7:00 pm at Central United Methodist Church - Fireside Room; 3700 Pacific Avenue Stockton CA 95204; Meetings are free and open to all. All Sierra Club meetings are virtual until the Club deems safe to resume in person meetings.
Membership Meetings People have been asking about our usual membership meetings that have been on hold since Spring 2020 due to COVID 19 concerns about meeting in person. We don’t know when when we might even begin to consider holding in-person meetings so we’re going to attempt to move forward with Zoom. It’s not the same as in-person but staying informed is very important. Please let us know if you have ideas or concerns or would like to help with our efforts. We’re starting with some interesting presentations that concern our local area. Please join us if you are able.

Opening Doors For Native Steelhead and Salmon Populations on the Calaveras River;
A Progress Report on the Removal of Barriers to Migrating Fish
Monday, April 26,2021 @ 7pm
Presented by Jim Marsh
Zoom link noted below
Habitat loss is the single most significant cause of species extinction in our times. This talk will focus on some significant efforts that are taking place locally--hidden in plain sight--with some practically in our own backyards.
Historically the Calaveras River was home to significant populations of migratory fish species primarily Steelhead Trout but also Chinook Salmon. Evidence of the seasonal passage of these fish up and down the river can still be witnessed by the careful, lucky observer at just the right times in places as close as the shallows under the Wood Memorial Footbridge on the UOP campus and in the rocky riffle under the Pacific Avenue Bridges.
Jim Marsh will report on recent work being done to remove some of the worst of the nearly 100 obstacles that face Steelhead and Salmon on their annual spawning journeys up and down the Calaveras to and from some of their most potentially fertile breeding habitat below Hoga Dam. Easing access to favored upriver habitat represents a major win in the efforts to conserve highly at-risk natural populations.

Modern Fires in Ancient Forests
Save the Redwoods League Director of Science Kristen Shive, PhD, gave an up to date and very interesting talk about California’s unprecedented fire season in 2020 and its effects on our iconic coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. Joined by Sam Hodder, the League’s president and CEO, Shive discussed fire ecology, the impacts of the recent fires across coast redwood and giant sequoia species, and provided an update on the status of League-owned properties Cascade Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Alder Creek within the Giant Sequoia National Monument.
