Press Release: First-of-a-Kind Heat Pump Installation
January 25, 2023
Palo Alto, CA
On Wednesday, January 25, eight new Heat Pumps will be lifted onto the roof and installed at the Peninsula Conservation Center (PCC ; 3921 East Bayshore, PA) starting at 11:00 am. The press and public are most welcome to be there to see the units, find out more about them, and watch them go onto the roof.
This is the first non-residential building in PA to have traditional, natural gas fired, roof-top HVAC units replaced with all-electric Heat Pumps for both heating & cooling. The PCC already has electric hot water heating, so now the building will become all-electric. Building electrification is a key strategy in Palo Alto’s newly updated Sustainability/Climate Action Plan. Currently, about 30% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the burning of natural gas in buildings. New buildings will be required to have electric appliances, but existing buildings need to be converted to reduce current emissions and meet the 80% GHG reduction goal by 2030.
The PCC Board and its tenants (Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet, Bay Area Funeral Consumers Association, California Native Plant Society Santa Clara Valley, Camp Unalayee, Canopy, Climate Resilient Communities, Grassroots Ecology, Green Foothills, League of Women Voters of Palo Alto, Sierra Club Loma Prieta, and The Trail Center) are proud to have the PCC be in a leadership position in this important work. The PCC folks and Richard Izmirian, the Heat Pump installing contractor, will be on hand at 11:00 a.m. on the 25th to answer questions about the project. For more information, the PCC Building Manager, Pat Martin can also be reached at 650-994-4601 or manager@
