Former Loma Prieta Executive Committee Member Les Kishler attended a very special event in Yosemite on May 15th, 2024, and was gracious to report on it.
"The Yosemite Valley dogwoods were in full bloom and the waterfalls were roaring. A ceremony was held to issue 16 new Ansel Adams commemorative stamps. Adams was one of the most influential Sierra Club members in its history. He served on the Sierra Club national board and inspired a significant increase in Sierra Club membership by taking a strong public stand in protection of the environment and wilderness during the 1980's. During that time the Ronald Reagan/James Watt administration fought to weaken important environmental protections initiated during the 1960's and 1970's.
Speakers at the ceremony included park ranger Shelton Johnson who was featured in Ken Burn's National Parks documentary and Yosemite National Park Superintendent Cicely Muldoon and Ansel Adams' grandson. The commemorative stamps effort was the result of work done by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust, Yosemite’s Ansel Adams Gallery and the United States Postal Service."
The United States Postal Service honored Ansel Adams with stamps showcasing 16 stunning portraits of the American Landscape with a First-Day-Of-Issue dedication ceremony for the Ansel Adams Forever stamps featuring photographs made by the esteemed artist and environmentalist.
