The Sierra Club Loma Prieta (SCLP) Chapter’s 30x30 campaign is our local effort to meet the twin crises of climate change and species extinction. 30x30 is part of the broader state, national and international conservation movement that originated with the E.O. Wilson 2016 book, Half Earth.
The SCLP 30x30 task force works under the guidance of the California Department of Natural Resources (CNRA) Pathways to 30x30 plan and the Sierra Club California 30x30 leadership team in coordination with Chapter leadership approval.
30x30 goals prioritize four tenets in the pursuit of conserving 30 percent of California land and water by 2030. They are:
- elevating traditional Tribal management and leadership
- ensuring that underserved communities are served first and have equal access to nature
- climate mitigation and adaptation
- stemming the loss of biodiversity through habitat protection/restoration, wildlife corridors, and more
Recent progress by the Chapter has focused on establishing one local conservation priority (LCP) for each of the three counties served by SCLP.
- The flagship LCP is the 3-Chapter Bay Alive campaign that advocates for nature based solutions (NBS) to sea level rise (SLR). NBS will protect/restore/expand wetlands around the San Francisco Bay and ensure a future living bay. Monthly meetings with the 3-Chapter Bay Alive campaign seek to bring 30x30 resources to the policy goals and practical projects defined by the Bay Alive Team.
- San Benito County efforts have focused on informing the conservation organizations in San Benito county about opportunities for grant funding. The SCLP 30x30 task force has researched available grants to narrow the focus to grants that might apply to these efforts.
- The Pillar Point Harbor and MPA along with the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve are the priorities for the San Mateo Coast.
