Honoring
Walter T. Moore
Honoree - Walter T. Moore
President, Peninsula Open Space Trust
Walter T. Moore is a vital figure in the world of local land conservation. He has been instrumental in protecting over 80,000 acres of open space on the peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of wildlife and all the people who live or visit here.
"Open space is an essential part of our region’s rich heritage. It is what makes the Peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountains so special. I have so many great memories exploring local lands with family and friends. It means a great deal to me to preserve open space for future generations and to receive this recognition from the Sierra Club," he said.
At a time when the Valley risked losing its connection to the natural world, Walter has worked to organize successive campaigns to save critical redwood forests, creeks and watersheds, coastline, working lands, and wildlife corridors from development, making many of these spaces available for the public to enjoy.
An attorney by trade and a nature lover in spirit, Walter worked to develop and pass both a $300M bond measure for the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and a $120M tax measure funding the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, POST’s partner in the protection of the vital landscape linkage between the Santa Cruz and Diablo mountain ranges in the south bay – Coyote Valley.
In addition to his responsibilities as the President of Peninsula Open Space Trust, Walter is a board member and past board chair of the California Council of Land Trusts and former board chair of the Bay Area Open Space Council (now known as Together Bay Area). He is active in the local community as an American Leadership Forum – Silicon Valley Senior Fellow, a former member of the Palo Alto Universit– Rotary Club and a former board member of the Sequoia YMCA in Redwood City. He has been with POST since 1995.
