What is Ready For 100?

The Sierra Club’s Ready For 100 campaign advocates for an equitable and affordable energy system powered by 100% clean, renewable energy by the year 2050.
Communities across the United States are committed to leading the transition to 100% clean, renewable sources of energy, like wind, solar, and battery storage. As civic and religious leaders, students, parents, frontline workers, business owners, educators, mayors, and beyond, we are nurturing a diverse movement in cities and towns across the country to pursue the solutions needed to develop strong, healthy, resilient communities.
Renewable energy is cleaner, healthier, and more affordable than dirty fuels like coal and fracked gas—it creates family-sustaining union jobs, lowers bills, and is available right now. It’s time to put power back in the hands of our communities and leave fossil fuels behind.
Over 170 cities, including Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and San Diego, and eight states are committed to a vision of 100% clean and renewable energy for all. Additionally, over 50 cities are already powered entirely by clean and renewable sources of energy, including Rock Port, Aspen, and Santa Monica. The moment—and movement—for clean energy is here. We’re committed to ensuring the transition to 100% benefits everyone.

We envision healthy, thriving communities across the United States, powered by affordable, community-based, and 100% clean, renewable sources of energy; where our energy system is predicated on racial, economic and environmental justice; where a thriving workforce has access to secure, safe and sustainable jobs; and where there is democratic accountability to ensure that the energy industry is fair, just and aligned with the public interest.
The Ready For 100 Story
In 2015, the Ready For 100 campaign launched with a bold idea: that every community in the United States could be powered entirely by clean, renewable sources of energy. Solar panels and wind turbines were some of the few climate solutions that a majority of people—regardless of geography or political affiliation—could get behind. What lacked was the will to jumpstart a transformation toward a cleaner, more democratic energy system that puts communities first.
Across the country, local leaders began joining activists by committing to a vision of 100% clean, renewable energy for all. The movement deepened after President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. would pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2017, as more and more communities looked to local action as a way to achieve racial, economic, and environmental justice. The U.S. Conference of Mayors even passed a resolution stating cities would lead the transition away from fossil fuels to 100% clean energy, demonstrating that U.S. climate action could be led locally.
In 2018, Cincinnati, Ohio became the 100th city to commit to 100% clean energy. By then, states, utilities, and even federal lawmakers had recognized that people were ready for the clean energy revolution and developed policies of their own. In just a few short years, the vision for 100% clean energy for 100% of people had become the new normal.
Looking ahead, the challenge facing activists is a large one: how do we reach 100% in a way that is equitable and just, lifting all communities at once? Ready For 100 is committed to joining justice organizations and communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis to ensure the clean energy transition does not replicate the failures of the current energy system, that people have a say in where their power comes from, and renewable energy is accessible to everyone.

Dig into RF100Who is Ready For 100?
Ready For 100 is unique among Sierra Club and other traditional grassroots efforts. As a distributed campaign, we cultivate networks of local leaders across the country who support each other in building a powerful, well-organized movement from the ground up. Bound by a shared vision, over 150 local teams consisting of volunteers, Sierra Club chapters, and coalitions are working to equitably transition their cities to 100% clean, renewable energy in their own cities, towns, counties, or states.
From 2016 to 2019, Ready For 100 teams supported mayors in pledging their support through the Mayors For 100% Clean Energy initiative. Mayors continue to play a role as leading voices advocating for the energy transition, especially beyond their own communities at the utility, state, and regional level.
