Environmental Policy
Environmental Policy
From worsening climate change and extreme weather to extinction and habitat loss, we see the need for environmental protection all around us.
But the good news is – policy works
Our movement has a strong history of passing critical environmental laws that have brought species back from the brink, cleaned up polluted air, protected precious lands and waters, and invested millions of dollars in clean energy to fight climate change.
Among these bedrock policies are the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act.
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 can save the average household nearly $14,000 in clean energy rebates
The Biden-Harris administration has created a legacy of climate and environmental action
The Biden-Harris administration passed the largest investment in clean energy and climate action in history through the Inflation Reduction Act, and finalized more than 300 executive actions to protect our air, water, and environment.
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 includes more than 100 programs that will invest about $370 billion in climate action, clean energy jobs, and environmental justice.
Victory!
After years of grassroots-led organizing, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law in 2022, which puts us on a path to cutting climate pollution 40 percent by 2030 while creating nine million family-sustaining jobs. Since its passage, we have seen economic growth and revitalization through 646 new clean energy projects (290 of which are in low-income communities), the creation of more than 334,000 good-paying, clean energy jobs, and significant household energy savings across the country.
What We Are Doing
The Sierra Club works tirelessly at the federal, state, and local level to advocate for policies that protect people and the planet. Whether it’s supporting our members to attend grassroots lobbying days, inviting you to submit a public comment or call your Member of Congress, or meeting directly with decision makers, we are fighting to pass and strengthen the protections we need to safeguard our environment.
But right now, many of these laws are under attack. The fossil fuel industry and Republicans in their pockets are working tirelessly to slash foundational environmental protections and block our progress towards an equitable, thriving future for all. Sierra Club’s campaigns are committed to protecting these key protections for our communities and our environment.
