Green Jobs

Green jobs are careers focused on environmental sustainability and on supporting the transition from fossil fuel dependency to a clean-energy economy. Fighting climate change and protecting the environment will require more green jobs and a robust clean energy economy.

In the U.S., green jobs are on the rise - but they are under threat

Green jobs can span a wide range of sectors, including renewable energy like solar and wind, energy efficiency, waste management, environmental conservation, and more.

They represent a growing share of the workforce, reflecting a broader trend towards more sustainable economic practices. Green jobs are on the rise despite the Trump administration’s efforts to cancel nearly-completed renewable energy projects, including five offshore wind farms that will power hundreds of thousands of homes.

Fighting climate change and protecting the environment will require millions of skilled workers -- from electricians and engineers to construction workers and manufacturing specialists -- to build the clean energy infrastructure our communities need.

Victory!

Public pressure from labor unions, community leaders, and advocates like you has helped defend critical investments in clean manufacturing and industrial decarbonization, including projects in red and blue states alike that reduce pollution from aluminum, steel, and cement production.

What We Are Doing

For far too long, economic policies have viewed strong economic growth and climate-friendly policies as an either/or decision. However, Sierra Club’s Industrial Transformation campaign seeks a new approach that creates good-paying clean manufacturing jobs, cuts industrial pollution, and builds climate resilience for those hardest hit by the effects of climate change.

The Trump Administration threatened to cancel the Industrial Demonstration Projects that work to reduce emissions in the manufacturing sector. The Industrial Transformation campaign helped garner support from 58 House Democrats to protect projects that are working to clean up aluminum, steel, and cement production.

As the Trump administration continues to attempt to cancel or delay Industrial Demonstration Projects designed to reduce emissions in heavy industry, Sierra Club is organizing alongside labor, environmental justice advocates, and community partners to protect federal investments that support American workers while cleaning up some of the most polluting sectors of our economy.
