Indianapolis, IN – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the Indiana Solar for All coalition was awarded over $117 million in funding through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s Solar For All program. The competition, created by President Biden’s landmark Inflation Reduction Act, seeks to enable low-income and disadvantaged households across America to access the benefits of low-cost, clean solar energy—benefits that include home energy savings, energy resilience, improved air quality, wealth building, and quality jobs.
The Indiana Solar for All Coalition, led by the Indiana Community Action Association, includes the Black Sun Light Sustainability in partnership with Indiana State Conference of the NAACP, the Indiana Energy Independence Fund, Energy Matters Community Coalition, Faith in Place, Solar United Neighbors of Indiana, Earth Charter Indiana, and the cities of Fort Wayne, Gary, and Indianapolis.
The Indiana Solar for All Coalition was one of 113 non profits that sought funding through the program. A complete list of recipients of Solar For All awards can be found here.
The climate law authorized $7 billion in funding for the program, but by last year’s deadline for applications, EPA had received requests totaling more than $38 billion.
Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter Executive Committee member Shannon Anderson said, “It’s a wonderful Earth Day when we can help provide much needed financial relief, and cleaner air to struggling households. We can do this with the amazing power and flexibility of solar panels. This program is a brilliant step forward for reducing energy burden and tackling climate change."
Solar for All funding was also awarded through Growth Opportunity Partners, which includes Indianapolis, Cleveland, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Charleston, WV, Buffalo/Erie County, Huntington, WV, Morgantown, WV, Kansas City, and Fort Wayne. This coalition received over $150 million and will be used to facilitate the clean energy transition in America’s industrial heartland communities.
