BRUSSELS -- Today, during the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit, the Vietnamese government, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and others announced a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to help Vietnam transition from coal power and accelerate clean energy growth. Vietnam is one of the world’s top coal-using countries. The Vietnam JETP includes $15.5 billion over the next three to five years and aims to peak Vietnam’s power sector emissions by 2030, five years earlier than initially planned.
The Vietnam JETP is the third such deal of its kind, following a $20 billion JETP between the US, Japan, and others to help Indonesia retire coal plants and move up the country’s peak coal emission date to 2030 announced at the G-20 in November.
An International Energy Agency report released last week found that clean energy will replace coal as the world’s largest energy source by 2025.
In response, Sierra Club Senior Director of International Climate and Policy Cherelle Blazer issued the following statement:
“There’s no denying the facts: one by one, we’re seeing countries, even those most reliant on coal, move away from dirty energy and toward a clean energy economy. We still need to see the final details around financing and just transition for this latest JETP. Coal’s days are numbered and it’s not a moment too soon. The clock is ticking.”
