Washington, DC - Today, Ford and the United Auto Workers announced a $3.7 billion investment and the creation of more than 6,200 new union jobs to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) in facilities across Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio.
The investments will expand production of the F-150 Lightning truck and the E-Transit van – which have received overwhelming demand – and a new EV commercial vehicle. Ford has committed to make 2 million electric vehicles per year by 2026.
Nearly 3,000 UAW-Ford workers will go from temporary worker status to full-time status with full benefits and pay raises.
Katherine García, Director of Sierra Club's Clean Transportation for All Campaign, released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club commends Ford’s investment to create green jobs and respond to the country’s demand for EVs. Urgently deploying EVs will save consumers money at the pump, curb the impacts of climate change, and help protect our health. The shift to the clean energy economy must advance strong labor standards that benefit auto workers and ensure that communities thrive.
“To bolster the investments announced today, Congress must also pass legislation investing in climate, jobs, and justice to ensure communities across the country can access incentives for new and used EVs, count on reliable charging infrastructure, and benefit from other critical clean transportation priorities.”
Derrick Figures, Director of the Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Program, released the following statement:
“The new electric vehicle manufacturing jobs in the Midwest are essential for reducing pollution and rebuilding the middle class. The U.S. has a critical opportunity to be a leader in the transition to electric vehicles by investing and expanding domestic manufacturing capacities. It’s essential this transition ensures good, family-sustaining careers that uplift local workers.”
