Washington, DC – Yesterday, President Biden unveiled his FY2023 budget, which requests $1.6 trillion in federal funding for the 2023 fiscal year. The proposed budget includes the largest funding request ever for the EPA, Department of Energy, and Department of the Interior. At the crux of the budget is adjusting the tax code to ensure the wealthiest billionaires pay their fair share, efforts to address inflation, and a repeal of fossil fuel subsidies.

In response, Sierra Club Director of People and Nature Policy Kirin Kennedy released the following statement:

“A president’s budget is a demonstration of their values. Once again, President Biden is telling us that his values lie with the American people, our clean air and water, climate action, and environmental justice. The Sierra Club appreciates President Biden for proposing a budget rooted in advancing an equitable and just recovery that centers people over polluters and advancing these efforts through making sure corporations and the wealthiest pay their fair share.

“President Biden has presented Congress with a critical blueprint on the priorities they must consider when crafting the FY2023 budget. No longer should the American public subsidize corporate polluters – especially as they reap record profits. Every single one of us has the right to drink safe water and breathe clean air. And the US must seize upon the opportunity to grow the clean energy economy, both here at home and abroad. We thank President Biden and look forward to working with Congress to craft a budget built upon this proposal.”
