WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Reuters reported that Toyota outsold General Motors in 2021 in the United States. GM has been the national leader in annual sales since 1931.
Toyota’s top five best-selling vehicles in 2021 were all gas-powered: the RAV4 compact SUV, the Camry midsize sedan, the Corolla compact sedan, the Highlander midsize SUV, and the Tacoma compact pickup truck.
The EPA finalized stronger clean car standards in December to slash pollution from light-duty cars and trucks, a rule that Toyota lobbied to weaken (and sided with the Trump administration to completely unravel).
In response, Katherine García, Director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign, released the following statement:
“Toyota is on top in sales in the US, but the automaker remains stalled on electric vehicles while it continues to manufacture and market gas guzzlers in its largest market.
“Electrifying the transportation sector this decade is essential to make climate progress and improve air quality in communities across the nation. The US’ best-selling automaker must change course and get EVs on roads now. We’ve got a New Year’s resolution for Toyota: Commit to 100% EV sales by 2035. Get started on manufacturing and marketing the vehicles this month.”
