Las Vegas, NV-- Today, the Nevada Assembly passed AJR3, a resolution in support of protecting 30% of the lands and waters in Nevada by 2030 as a necessary step to protect natural systems and mitigate the climate and extinction crises. The resolution also calls for the establishment of the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument and the permanent protection of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge from the threat of military expansion.
In response, Christian Gerlach Sierra Club Our Wild America campaign organizer in Nevada, released the following statement:
"The Sierra Club is thrilled to see the passage of a statewide goal to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030 in Nevada. This is a celebratory day for nature, access to the outdoors, and our health as Nevadans.
“It's clear public lands, forests, wetlands, and green spaces in this state will play a huge role in meeting our global climate and biodiversity protection goals. This effort gives us a major opportunity to work together to safeguard the lands, air and water on which our communities depend.”
