Santa Fe, NM -- On Saturday, March 27, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Melanie Stansbury in the special election for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District.
"We are excited to endorse Melanie Stansbury for Congress," said Richard Barish, Political Chair of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter. "The climate crisis is the most urgent issue facing the world. Melanie has an extraordinary depth of knowledge about the crisis and, most importantly, she has detailed and specific ideas about what Congress should do to address it. We are confident that she will work to protect New Mexico’s families’ health, air and water, and build a clean energy economy that works for New Mexicans in Congress, just as she has as a State Representative in the Roundhouse. Melanie is the leader we need to ensure that our children have a future in New Mexico."
“I am running for Congress to lift up the voices of our communities and tackle our biggest challenges from COVID recovery, to food and water security, to the most critical issue of our time–climate change,” said Melanie Stansbury. “As a native New Mexican, I know New Mexico and our communities, I know the system, and I know the science. I’ve spent my entire career working on the issues that most affect our communities in New Mexico and I know we have the grit, determination, and heart to get the job done.”
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Stansbury’s campaign.

"Sierra Club volunteers will contact voters on her behalf, touting her exemplary environmental record as to why she’s the best candidate for the job.
