Denver, CO: The Colorado Chapter of the Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of former Governor John Hickenlooper in the race for U.S. Senate.
"We are pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses John Hicklooper for election to the Senate," said Sierra Club Colorado Chapter Director Emily Gedeon. "Colorado deserves a Senator who will prioritize public lands and conservation from day one, not just when it is politically convenient. Our 100,000 members and supporters across Colorado look forward to having a representative in the Senate who we can work with to build a strong, inclusive clean energy economy and who will speak up for key environmental protections.”
Given the current administration and Congressional Republicans’ continued threats to clean air and water and public lands, it is more important than ever to elect environmental champions to the Senate. John Hickenlooper has a strong record of working to defend public lands, and he has committed to working toward a 100% renewable energy economy. At the same time, Cory Gardner has spent his time in office siding with Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell to undermine efforts to combat climate change, installing fossil fuel lobbyists at the helm of the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of the Interior, and slashing budgets for environmental protection and land and water conservation.
“Working shoulder to shoulder with the Sierra Club when I was governor, we led the country and passed 'gold standard' environmental protections to protect Colorado’s public lands, clean air, and clean water,” said Hickenlooper. “But with Cory Gardner’s support, President Trump has rolled back many of those same types of environmental protections. I’m proud to have the Sierra Club’s support in this race and look forward to working with them again, as Senator, to take on climate change and fight for our public lands.”
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Hickenlooper’s campaign to ensure that Cory Gardner is replaced with a champion for the environment and public lands.
“This is the most consequential election of our lifetimes, and it has never been more important to build a majority in the Senate that understands the urgency of the climate crisis and the need to protect clean air and water and preserve our public lands,” said Sierra Club PAC Director Matthew Gravatt.“ The Sierra Club is committed to doing all we can to mobilize our members and volunteers to ensure that John Hickenlooper unseats Cory Gardner. We look forward to a victory for John Hickenlooper on election night and to working with him to fight for our environment and public lands as a U.S. Senator.”
