CARSON CITY, NEVADA – Today, Governor Steve Sisolack announced that Nevada will join the growing list of over two dozen states adopting the clean car standards, which require new cars sold in the state to emit fewer greenhouse gases, as well as an increasing percentage of new cars sold in the state to be zero emission vehicles.

Last September, the Trump administration revoked the California waiver that sets more stringent greenhouse gas standards than the federal standards, as well as a Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which other states are authorized to adopt under Section 177 of the Clean Air Act. In March, as Americans faced the growing COVID-19 pandemic, the Trump Administration undermined health and safety further by finalizing its federal rollback of the clean car standards, a major reversal of climate action. The Sierra Club has taken the administration to court over both indefensible attacks.

Cars and trucks on Nevada roads are the number one source of climate-disrupting pollution in the state. Clean Cars Nevada will result in cleaner air and help consumers save money.

In response, Jasmine Vazin, a Conservation Organizer with the Sierra Club's Toiyabe Chapter, released the following statement:

“We applaud the Sisolak administration for standing up for clean air, clean water, and a healthy climate--and against the Trump’s administration’s indefensible attack on our communities and our future. Clean car standards are critical to meeting Nevada’s climate goals, and the right of states to protect their residents from pollution has overwhelming support. In Nevada, with two of the fastest warming cities in the nation and some of the country’s worst air quality; this is a critical move that will directly help mitigate climate and public health impacts going forward.”
