WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Senate today passed a stimulus package aimed at alleviating economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The package follows an agreement reached by the White House and Congressional leadership, with funding focused on meeting healthcare, worker and small business needs. The House is expected to pass the legislation by unanimous consent.
In response Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement.
“Thanks to public pressure and Democratic leadership, the measures adopted today will provide critical health and economic relief to those who need it most. Meeting the urgent needs of families across the country and providing support for workers is vital; prioritizing people and public health over polluters is critical; and protecting our democracy by making sure people can vote safely is essential.
“We must continue to support one another during this crisis and work to ensure that when we come out on the other side, we have a more sustainable and equitable economy, a stronger democracy, and a cleaner energy future. This package moves us in the right direction, with much more to be done in the weeks and months ahead, including supporting clean energy, creating jobs by building resilient infrastructure, and continuing to ensure no bailouts for corporate polluters. We can heal communities, the economy, and the planet at the same time.”
