San Antonio, TX -- Today, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Jessica Cisneros for Congress in Texas’ 28th Congressional District. This is the Sierra Club’s first endorsement of a challenger to a sitting Democratic member of Congress in a number of cycles.
“Jessica Cisneros’ bold vision and determination to take on the fossil fuel industry and promote home-grown alternatives that create jobs is exactly what we need to tackle the climate crisis,” said Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter Director Cyrus Reed. “A vocal advocate of a Green New Deal, Jessica will act with the urgency required because the climate crisis isn’t a threat to future generations, it’s a threat to hers.”
A Texas native, Cisneros has touted the need to address the climate crisis through bold legislative action and understands the boon clean energy and clean transportation jobs have and can continue to be for her district. She has also been a vocal critic of Trump’s dangerous border walls and immigration policies.
"The people of South Texas are ready to have a new voice in Congress who will fight for our clean air, clean water, and who will work to bring thousands of green jobs to our district,” said Jessica Cisneros. “Texas has a real opportunity to lift up our communities and be a leader in the transition toward 100% renewable energy, and I'm proud to have Sierra Club's support in our effort to address the climate crisis with the scope, scale, and urgency it demands."
“The people of Texas 28th deserve to be represented by someone who will put their needs and their future above corporate polluter profits,” said Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune. “Jessica Cisneros is the lone candidate who will do exactly that, which is why the Sierra Club is proud to endorse her for Congress.”
The Sierra Club will mobilize its members and supporters to elect Jessica to Congress.
