WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, it was reported that California and four major automakers - Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, and Honda - entered into an agreement that commits manufacturers to increased fuel efficiency for their vehicles sold nationwide in the face of the Trump administration’s reckless clean car standards rollback.

The four automakers represent 30 percent of the U.S. auto market. The Sierra Club and allies have pressured all automakers, but especially Ford, for the past two years to recommit to the Obama administration’s clean car standards after the auto industry lobbied to roll back the standards when the Trump administration first came into office.

In response, Sierra Club’s Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“In the face of a total abdication of duties by the Trump administration, today’s announcement is a positive step forward. In response to the administration’s efforts to completely roll back the clean car standards, California has shown that it won’t idle in neutral while the Trump administration attempts to reverse progress on climate solutions and increase air pollution from transportation, the largest emitter of carbon pollution in our country.

“It is about time Ford and other automakers finally listened to the people and committed to moving forward on climate solutions. Other automakers should follow Ford, Honda, BMW, and Volkswagen and oppose the Trump administration’s dangerous rollback of clean car standards.”
