Boston, M.A. - Yesterday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) issued an order on long-term contracts for clean energy that paves the way for Governor Baker’s plan to source foreign hydroelectric power as a part of the state’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon pollution by 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050.

The Sierra Club had petitioned the DPU arguing that relying on Canadian hydroelectric power will do nothing to meet the state’s climate goals and stunts investment in local manufacturing, energy generation, and innovation. An analysis of the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) released last year revealed that it would have no impact on carbon pollution. The NECEC still needs siting and federal approvals, including review under the National Environmental Policy Act.

In response, Mark Kresowik Eastern Region Deputy Director of the Sierra Club issued the following statement:

“The DPU’s decision forecloses on the future of a locally-driven, clean energy economy in the Commonwealth by giving a green light to ship taxpayer money out of the country instead of investing in more affordable, more resilient solar and wind energy right here in the region. This order is a disaster for Massachusetts families and businesses who want more jobs, stable energy costs, and a healthy environment for future generations.”
