Statement of Purpose
"To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the Earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the Earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives."
Established in 1972, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club has over 4,300 dues paying members in Oklahoma with monthly meetings in Norman (Red Earth Group), Oklahoma City (Cimarron Group) and Tulsa (Green Country Group). Through the efforts of numerous dedicated volunteers, the Oklahoma Chapter organizes frequent outdoor activities, social events, conservation activities, and educational outreach efforts aimed at furthering the mission of the Sierra Club.
Standing committees at both the local and state level, integral to the success of the Oklahoma Chapter include the Conservation Committee, Outings, Political Committee, and Legislative Committee. From local food fairs and backpacking trips to film festivals and legislative lobbying, committee involvement offers opportunities to promote sustainability and environmental conservation with some of the most dedicated, kind-hearted folks in Oklahoma!
Over the years, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club has successfully protected Oklahoma's wildlife, preserved its natural resources, and educated the public on many issues at the local, state, and federal level. The volunteers and partners of the Sierra Club strive to be stewards of Oklahoma's environment. Whether you are interested in backyard gardening, canoe trips, or grassroots lobbying, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club welcomes you to the oldest and largest environmental organization in the nation!
