Today Sierra Club and the Union of Concerned Scientists delivered nearly 5,000 petitions from residents in 8 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states asking governors to commit to a program to tackle climate change from our transportation sector. Hundreds of Massachusetts residents sent the following message to Governor Baker:
Dear Governor Baker,
Our transportation system is outdated, congested, unreliable, and difficult for some people to access. Cars and trucks are also the largerst source of climate and air pollution in the region. Clean transportation solutions such as electric cars and buses, reliable transit, and safer opportunities to walk and bike will help my family and community by creating jobs, saving lives, and protecting our climate. I urge you to work with other states, communities, and stakeholders to build a clean, equitable, modern transportation system.
One critical step would be to create a regional program that limits pollution from motor fuels while generating new funds for clean transportation investments. This program should include dedicated funding for projects that will improve transportation for communities who have been overburdened by pollution and underserved by our current system. We can't afford to wait any longer.
