Open Volunteer Roles
The following specific roles are open in the Chapter, though all committees are always looking for new volunteers. Please email eva.sadana@sierraclub.org if you are interested in any of these.
Membership Committee members
The Chapter's Membership Committee creates meaningful activities for District residents to connect with environmental issues that lead to a sense of belonging to a community of like-minded folks and works to increase our Sierra Club DC membership. We are looking for members to attend quarterly meetings, and help plan social and service events for the Chapter. Time commitment: 3 hours per month.
Gratitude Officers
The most important thing in our fundraising is saying thank you! Join our team of thank you note writers who, as soon as we receive a gift to the Chapter, hand-write a personal thank you note to every donor. This is a crucial job, and we’ll provide you with a brief training and the stamps and thank you cards so you can do this from home. Time commitment: 1 hour a week.
Individual Giving Officer
As our Chapter grows in impact so too does our need to raise money! This volunteer will help our chapter grow and manage our individual giving program by regularly researching donor prospects in our database, and working directly with our Chapter Director so he can reach out to donors and prospective donors. You’ll produce monthly call lists for our Chapter Director to call through based on your research, and help take notes on the results to organize our data and efforts. Time commitment: 4-8 hours per month.
Political Volunteer
We’re in the middle of one of the most important local elections of recent history. Next year we’ll have a new mayor, three councilmember seats are wide open, and key candidates are running to stay in office. As our Political Committee continues to roll out our endorsements, we need to build a team of volunteers ready to knock doors and make phone calls for climate champions. Ready to get to work? Data Officers
Each Chapter committee needs a data officer to help with tracking attendance, data entry of tabling sign-ups, and with managing events on our internal scheduling system (Campfire). Improving our data is a huge part of our ongoing success at the Chapter! Time commitment: 3 hours per month.
Communications Officers
Each Chapter committee needs a communications officer to help with taking photos, writing blurbs of events, and writing committee updates to the bimonthly newsletter Member Update. Improving our communications is a key part of our strategic plan, and we could use your help! Time commitment: 2 hours per month.
Outings Leaders
The Chapter is looking to expand the outdoor activities offered in DC by Sierra Club. Our regional outings program, SCPRO, led over 85 hikes in 2025. We can do more, so we are looking for people who are interested in leading walks, hikes, paddles, and other outdoor adventures in the District and in nearby nature. To become an outings leader with the Sierra Club, you must complete online and in-person training to be certified, and then you must lead a minimum of 2 outings a year. Time commitment: 1-3 hours per month.
Print Newsletter Officers
For decades the Chapter sent regular newsletters to members, and we are bringing it back! The Chapter is designing and strategizing how to send physical print newsletter to our membership in Summer 2026, and we need a team of volunteers to make this happen. Time commitment: 3-5 hours per month.
