The Sierra Club strongly opposes efforts to recall DC Councilmembers Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau. The Sierra Club has previously endorsed these two key environmental allies, and today we continue to proudly stand with Councilmembers Allen and Nadeau. The District needs to focus on the pressing issues facing our residents, not get distracted by misinformation and costly efforts to undo elections from barely more than a year ago.
Councilmember Allen chairs the Committee on Transportation and Environment and has a proven track record as the DC Council’s environmental and climate champion. The Sierra Club asks Ward 6 residents to decline to sign the misleading recall petition. All DC residents can donate to help Charles Allen fight the recall.
“Charles Allen is our environmental and climate champion on the DC Council,” said Mark Rodeffer, chair of the Sierra Club DC Chapter Political Committee. “Charles Allen is a fighter for reducing climate pollution and air pollution in DC. He has led efforts to transition the District off fossil fuels, reduce utility bills through energy efficiency, and expand sustainable transportation. Now fossil fuel lobbyists, Republican staffers on Capitol Hill, and supporters of the disgraced former president are trying to recall him. The Sierra Club and the environmental community will fight to keep our champion on the DC Council.”
Councilmember Nadeau is a stalwart environmental ally, voting for our key priorities, co-sponsoring most of the major legislation we’ve sought to enact, and working to reduce waste going to landfills and incinerators. The Sierra Club asks our members and supporters to donate to help Brianne Nadeau fend off the recall attempt.
“Brianne Nadeau has been a vital partner to the environmental community and we want to continue to work with her on environmental priorities,” said Susan Schorr, chair of the Sierra DC Chapter Zero Waste Committee. “Chairing the committee with oversight of the Department of Public Works, Councilmember Nadeau worked hard to ensure the successful launch of DC’s curbside compost pilot, which has proven popular and effective. She also worked closely with the Sierra Club and environmental stakeholders to ensure the department hired a seasoned zero waste professional to lead the department's Office of Waste Diversion. We need to keep Brianne Nadeau on the DC Council.”
The Sierra Club plans to mobilize our thousands of members and supporters across the District to fight these misguided recall efforts and ensure the continued service of the DC Council’s top environmental allies.
