The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Phil Mendelson for re-election as DC Council Chairman.
“Phil Mendelson has been a leader on transportation electrification, especially pushing WMATA to speed up its painfully slow transition from dirty diesel buses to clean electric buses that improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mark Rodeffer, Sierra Club DC Chapter Political Committee chair. “Phil Mendelson has pledged to work with the Sierra Club and our allies in the faith community to transition DC’s buildings – starting with low- and moderate-income households – off fossil fuels. Indoor combustion of fossil fuels harms public health, causes dangerous indoor air pollution, and contributes to the climate crisis. The Sierra Club looks forward to working with Phil Mendelson to ensure these priorities are adequately funded.”
Phil Mendelson said: "Throughout my tenure on the DC Council, I’ve worked closely with the Sierra Club on strategies to reduce the impact of climate change and invest in our renewable and sustainable energy future. I am honored to receive the Sierra Club’s endorsement and look forward to continuing to work together on the critical issue of protecting our environment."
The Sierra Club is evaluating candidates in other 2022 races in DC and hopes to make additional endorsements soon.
DC’s primary election is Tuesday, June 21, 2022. The Board of Elections begins sending mail-in ballots to all registered voters on May 16. The general election is Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
