The Sierra Club endorses three strong environmental allies for re-election to the DC Council: Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, At-Large Councilmember Robert White, and Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto.
Councilmember Lewis George chairs the DC Council committee with oversight of DC government buildings, where she’s worked to free taxpayers from the financial burden of remaining on fossil fuels.
“Janeese Lewis George is a champion for environmental justice. She’s the only member of the DC Council with a 100% voting record over the last four years,” said Mark Rodeffer, chair of the Sierra Club DC Chapter Political Committee. “The Sierra Club endorses Councilmember Lewis George for re-election because of her strong commitments to ensuring that DC moves off fossil fuels, replaces poisonous lead water pipes, and builds social housing that is sustainable and affordable for all.”
Councilmember White, who chairs the DC Council Housing Committee, has been a steadfast ally in transitioning DC’s buildings off fossil fuels.
“The Sierra Club has endorsed Robert White since his first campaign, and we’re proud to endorse him again,” said Lara Levison, Chair of the DC Sierra Club DC Chapter Clean Energy Committee. “Councilmember White is a key ally we know we can count on. He worked with the Sierra Club to begin transitioning DC government buildings off fossil fuels and to ensure that affordable housing in DC is not saddled with the multi-billion dollar costs of remaining on the gas utility’s expensive and outdated pipeline system.”
Councilmember Pinto serves on the DC Council committee with jurisdiction over utility regulation and has worked to improve DC’s lax oversight of gas and electric utilities.
“Brooke Pinto is a consistent vote for environmental priorities on the DC Council and the Sierra Club endorses her for re-election,” said Matt Gravatt, chair of the Sierra Club DC Chapter. “Shortly after taking office in 2020, Councilmember Pinto was the deciding vote against an unqualified nominee to serve on DC’s utility regulatory commission. She then went to work on legislation requiring that DC’s utility regulators have backgrounds in clean energy and consumer protection. She also continues to support implementation of energy efficiency improvements in large commercial buildings in the District.”
The Sierra Club encourages climate and environmental voters to donate to the campaigns of Janeese Lewis George, Robert White, and Brooke Pinto. Because each is participating in DC’s Fair Elections public financing program, contributions are matched five-to-one, meaning that a $50 contribution is matched with $250 for a total of $300. For Fair Elections candidates, the maximum donation is $50 for ward-level candidates and $100 for at-large candidates.
The Sierra Club is evaluating candidates in other DC Council races this year and hopes to make additional endorsements soon.
