DC chapter of nation’s largest environmental organization applauds incumbent’s support for climate action and environmental equity

WASHINGTON, DC – The Sierra Club endorses Elissa Silverman for a second term as an at-large member of the DC Council.

“The Sierra Club is delighted that Councilmember Silverman is supporting the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018,” said Mark Rodeffer, chair of the Sierra Club DC chapter. “DC must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions while holding harmless our most overburdened and underserved residents. We appreciate Councilmember Silverman’s commitment to achieving both goals.”

The Clean Energy DC legislation would require that DC transition to electricity from 100 percent renewable sources, reduce carbon pollution through improving the energy efficiency of large buildings, and fund programs to assist residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions while cutting energy bills. The DC Department of Energy and Environment estimates that the bill would reduce DC’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent.

The legislation was co-introduced by Councilmembers Mary Cheh, Phil Mendelson, Brianne Nadeau, Charles Allen and Trayon White and co-sponsored by Councilmembers Vincent Gray, David Grosso and Robert White. Councilmember Brandon Todd has tweeted his support and Councilmember Silverman brings the total number of supporters of the bill to 10 of the 13 members of the DC Council.

This year the Sierra Club has endorsed Council Chairman Phil Mendelson,  Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, Attorney General Karl Racine, and Councilmembers Brianne Nadeau, Mary Cheh and Charles Allen.

“We look forward to working with Councilmember Silverman and other environmental allies on the Council to pass this important bill this year,” Rodeffer said.
