The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Christina Henderson for a second term on the DC Council.
“The Sierra Club endorses Christina Henderson for re-election because of her steadfast support for the transition off fossil fuels, starting with DC’s low- and moderate-income families,” said Mark Rodeffer, the Sierra Club DC Chapter political chair. “Councilmember Henderson will work with us to resist proposals to waste billions of dollars on fossil fuel infrastructure, to reduce plastic pollution across DC, to finally provide Metro with a sustainable funding source, and to oppose a new football stadium on the banks of the Anacostia River. As the chair of the DC Council Health Committee, Councilmember Henderson understands that tackling environmental harms in DC is key to improving public health and reducing health disparities.”
Councilmember Henderson has been a consistent vote for environmental priorities in her first term in office and will work with the Sierra Club on environmental priorities over the next four years. Among the Sierra Club’s priorities in DC are full funding for the Healthy Homes Act, which will allow low- and moderate-income residents to reduce utility bills and improve indoor air quality by transitioning off fossil fuel appliances and preventing Washington Gas from charging DC residents billions of dollars to maintain its methane gas pipelines. The DC Chapter is also advocating for a bottle deposit law requiring that consumers pay a 10¢ to 15¢ deposit on each plastic, glass, or aluminum beverage container that is paid back when empty bottles are returned; a dedicated funding source for Metrorail and Metrobus; and protecting the Anacostia River by ensuring a new football stadium is not built at the RFK site. The Sierra Club is excited to work with Councilmember Henderson to advance these priorities.
“Clean energy, sustainable transportation, and healthy air and water are essential for our residents to thrive. I’m proud to have earned the Sierra Club’s endorsement for re-election and I look forward to working together to advance sustainable policies that support healthy residents and a greener future for the District of Columbia,” said Councilmember Henderson.
The Sierra Club DC Chapter’s Political Committee and Executive Committee both voted unanimously to endorse Councilmember Henderson. The Sierra Club is raising money for Councilmember Henderson's re-election, with all donations from DC residents receiving a public match of five to one.
