The Sierra Club is pleased to endorse DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto for a full four-year term representing Ward 2.
Councilmember Pinto has committed to many of the Sierra Club’s top priorities, including transitioning DC’s buildings from fossil fuels to renewable energy while expanding energy efficiency in those buildings, providing more electric vehicle charging as we make transportation in DC less reliant on automobiles, guaranteeing that DC residents do not drink water contaminated with lead, and reducing plastic waste in DC.
Pinto won the June 2 Democratic primary for the Ward 2 DC Council seat. On June 16, she won the special election to serve out the remainder of the term of the previous Ward 2 councilmember. She was sworn into office on June 27.
Already in her brief tenure on the DC Council, Councilmember Pinto has supported some of the Sierra Club’s top transportation priorities. She voted for the Vision Zero Omnibus Act, which prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist safety over streets that favor automobiles. In a close vote, Councilmember Pinto voted to preserve $35 million to expand transit in Ward 7.
“The Sierra Club is excited to work with Councilmember Pinto over the next four years to meet the pressing climate and conservation needs facing the District of Columbia,” said Mark Rodeffer, chair of the Sierra Club DC Chapter’s Political Committee.
The Sierra Club has already endorsed Robert White in the at-large DC Council race, Janeese Lewis George in Ward 4, Vince Gray in Ward 7 and Trayon White in Ward 8. The Sierra Club hopes to make a second endorsement in the at-large Council race.
