Dear Sierra Club DC members,
The DC Chapter has been fighting for environmental and climate justice for DC residents since 1974. We proudly and firmly stand in support of human and environmental rights, DC’s sovereignty, and protests. We believe #BlackLivesMatter and that police violence must end. Our hearts break for the victims of that violence. We have important work to do - together.
The Sierra Club’s mission is:
To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources;
To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and
To use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.
The DC Chapter advocates for clean water in the Potomac and Anacostia rivers that helps ensure safe drinking water for humans and wildlife. We are vocal proponents for clean and renewable energy and waste reduction that helps decrease greenhouse gases while improving air quality for all DC residents. We work to reduce the influence of money in politics and promote DC statehood. Chapter obtained the national Sierra Club’s resolution for DC statehood.
And, while we are proud of what we have accomplished, we humbly acknowledge that we also have a great deal more to learn - about racism, about environmental justice, and about how we can be more effective and representative. We are here - to listen and act. We are grateful that you are with us.
In solidarity,
Catherine Plume
Chair, Washington DC Chapter of the Sierra Club
