Antiquities Act - 118 Years

6/8/24 - The Antiquities Act - one of our most powerful tools for land conservation -- is a bipartisan bill that was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 8, 1906. The Act allows U.S. Presidents to designate existing federal public lands as national monuments using a Presidential Proclamation.

5/18/24 - Sa - Since opening the new Pinnacle Mountain State Visitors Center last November, PMSP has been making progress with other planned improvements. The driveway to the new Visitors Center is around 1/4 mile north of the West Summit Trail (WST) parking lot. A new road is being built just east of the highway between the Visitor's Center and the WST. Once that road is completed, it will become the entrance to the WST parking lot as the current direct access from the highway will likely be closed. It appears that additional parking spaces are being built between the road and the grassy field west of the restrooms. When visiting the visitors center, ask for a copy of the new trail guide which shows all the new trails built in recent years. .....The old visitor's center is still closed. It may be leased to a concessionaire at some point. .....With all the rain earlier this year, in recent days the Kingfisher Trail has been a good place to observe an abundant crop of poison ivy as well as a variety of snakes. Early wildflowers have mostly dried up but others may be waiting for additional rain before flowering.

4/30/24 - Tu - 4 to 7 pm - Conway - AR-DoT Public Involvement Meeting to discuss Hwy. 60 drainage in Perry County. Refer to page 9A in Sunday 4/28/24 Democrat Gazette for more info (potential impact to Toad Sick Park).

Central Arkansas Group Elections

12/30/2023 - If you received a ballot for the Executive Committee elections, you need to submit your ballot NOW before the deadline.

11/28/23 - Tu - The new Pinnacle Mountain State Park Visitors Center had their grand opening this morning with short speeches by park officials and Governor Sanders. The driveway to the new Visitors Center is around 1/4 mile north of the West Summit Trail parking lot. There is now a short extension of the Base Trail (south of the #3 marker) that connects to the Visitors Center with a new bike trail accessible nearby. The November issue of amp magazine (armoneyandpolitics.com) pages 24 & 25 describes architectural considerations that went into design of the building.

When visiting the visitors center, ask for a copy of the new trail guide. It appears that hiking trails have doubled in mileage in the last half-dozen years. I've heard a hiker describe the new (1 mile) Owl Pass Trail (between the boat launch ramp and the Arboretum) as a favorite. And I've seen families with small children riding bikes on this trail. (It is almost flat and fairly smooth.) Most of the other new trails are in the eastern part of the park. (Webmaster comment: I've now hiked many of the new trails east of the old Visitor's Center road and found most enjoyable, but recommend extra caution on the Jackfork Trail right next to the Maumelle River if the trail is covered with slippery leaves -as it was in January - as it would be easy to slip off the trail down into the river.)

Central Arkansas Safety Action Plan

11/2023 - Metroplan, the metropolitan planning organization for Central Arkansas (Faulkner County, Lonoke County, Pulaski County, and Saline County) is developing a Safety Action Plan. This Plan will identify and prioritize roadway safety improvements for all road users in Central Arkansas, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation users, motorists, and more. The goal of the Safety Action Plan is to improve roadway safety by significantly reducing or eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries through implementation focused on all road users. For more info [or to complete a survey to provide input to the plan], click HERE.   The survey is now completed but the link is retained for info only.

7/26/23 - LR - The new Pinnacle Mountain State Park News Visitor's Center (north of the West Parking Lot) will likely open this Fall.
8/5/23 update - Sometime in the last two weeks, the park has installed a new park bench on the West Summit Trail at the #3 marker.
10/10/23 update - It appears that a hiking or biking trail from the new Visitor's Center to the Arboretum is being built. This trail will run between the Base Trail and Little Maumelle River.
11/28/23 - Tu - The new Visitors Center had their grand opening this morning with short speeches by park officials and Governor Sanders. There is now a short extension of the Base Trail that connects to the Visitors Center with the new bike trail accessible nearby. The new Visitors Center is just south of the gravel park maintenance road that parallels part of the lower West Summit Trail.

Trivia Question of the Month - 10/10/23 - If you headed due east from the old Visitor's Center at Pinnacle Mountain State Park until you crossed a county line, what county would you be in? The correct answer: Faulkner County

11/19/23 - Su - Two trees, a hackberry and a catalpa, in Springdale have been designated as champion trees, i.e., the largest of their type in Arkansas. For more info, check page 5B of today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

The parking area is slightly less than 5 miles west of Chenal on Hwy 10, just after passing a long white fence. The main trail for hiking is similar to the Base Trail at Pinnacle but without all the rocks. For a description of the area, check pages 36-37 of the June issue of Arkansas Times. ...or click HERE for a news story/video. [unofficial trail map     (vertical red line at left of map is Hwy 10 just west of Lake Maumelle) ]
