Despite opposition from local shrimpers and fisherman and community groups, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Oct. 6 approved an air pollution permit that would allow construction of the Jupiter refinery in the Port of Brownsville, Texas. The commission, however, imposed two important pollution control requirements that will mitigate the dangerous air pollution from the facility if it is eventually built.

Today, the Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery had a massive oil spill from one of its storage tanks. The spill spurred prolonged road closures and will require extensive clean-up in the surrounding marshlands that have been polluted with oil and associated chemicals. The oil spill occurred just a few blocks from Texas City’s local high school and near the sensitive waters of Galveston Bay.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) released a proposed rule to amend certain aspects of its regulations for implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The phased approach to modifying the NEPA regulations would start with three specific changes in Phase 1 to restore certain regulatory provisions from the original 1978 regulations.

As Congress negotiates the details of the final Build Back Better Act, which will move in tandem with the bipartisan infrastructure bill, it’s imperative that any deal must pass the climate test, which means cutting climate pollution in half by 2030, creating good union jobs and a more equitable economy, and delivering on the United States’ international climate commitments ahead of the international climate meeting this November in Glasgow.

WASHINGTON D.C.--  Today, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) was introduced in the U.S. Senate.  Back in August, the bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Terri Sewell and passed by a vote of 219-212. The passing of the VRAA in the House was imperative, as it would complement the Freedom to Vote Act and bolster the bipartisan Voting Rights Act of 1965. It would expand and broaden Section 2, which has been weakened by two Supreme Court decisions.
