New York — Today, Governor Hochul, Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director Amanda Lefton broke ground on construction for New York’s first offshore wind farm, and the second commercial-scale offshore wind project to be approved by the federal government. The South Fork Wind Farm begins construction this year and is expected to begin operation at the end of 2023.

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers committed to withhold a Clean Water Act Section 404 permit for the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) at least until the project has a valid Endangered Species Act biological opinion.

A federal district court today struck down a 2020 decision by the US Fish and Wildlife Service that removed federal protections from gray wolves across much of the US The Trump administration delisted the gray wolf after 45 years of protection under the Endangered Species Act despite the strong disagreement from experts who noted that the wolf’s recovery hinged on continued protections. Although President Biden expressed personal concern for wolves, the Biden administration chose to defend the delisting decision.

AUSTIN, TX -- Today, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) voted to approve a weak and legally insufficient state implementation plan (SIP) to address the dangerous levels of SO2, or sulfur pollution, created by Vistra’s Martin Lake Coal Plant (Martin Lake) in Rusk County, Texas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must now review the plan by this summer, as required by the Clean Air Act, and should reject the plan as insufficient and inadequate.

Boston, MA – The grid operator for New England, ISO-NE, has decided to delay fixing a rule that makes it harder for renewable energy projects to replace unneeded fossil fuel power plants on the grid. Last week, the grid operator, along with the region’s largest utility companies, voted to delay making the urgent reform to the Minimum Offer Price Rule (MOPR) by two more years in a move that will keep open aging fossil fuel plants that continue polluting communities across the region and unnecessarily charging customers on their bills.
