Since 1978 our grassroots organization has worked to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet by advocating for public lands, wildlife, natural places, clean air and water, environmental justice, and a swift transition away from fossil fuels to a renewable energy economy. Our endorsement gives candidates the opportunity to highlight a credible and widely-recognized environmental validator, and we plan to mobilize our volunteer supporters to donate, canvass, and otherwise support campaigns we endorse.
City of Portland Candidates
Candidates for the Portland offices of City Council and Mayor are invited to apply for endorsement from the Sierra Club of Oregon. We intend to promote an environmental voter guide for our Portland members that includes our picks for City Council and the Mayor's race.
The priority due date for our questionnaire is Monday, August 12th at 11:59pm Pacific Time. We will consider all endorsement inquiries past August 12th but cannot guarantee that those endorsements would be confirmed in time to meet the August 29th voter pamphlet statement deadline.
Here is what we need from you:
1) Fill out the Portland Candidate Switchboard hosted by Oregon Futures Lab, if you haven't already.
- We are participating in the switchboard and can see its responses. You do not need to re-complete this form if you have already submitted it.
2) Fill out our Sierra Club Environmental Questionnaire for Portland City Candidates. Due date for priority consideration is Monday, August 12th at 11:59pm.
- Our form has seven categories with 2-4 short questions each. There is no word limit but you are encouraged to be concise - we are looking for brief yet comprehensive answers.

We do not anticipate holding interviews with our top candidates, and will aim to finalize and release our first round of endorsements by August 20th.
Given our multi-winner and ranked choice voting system, we anticipate endorsing 2-4 candidates in each City Council district and likely one or two candidates for Mayor. Thank you very much for running for office. Public service is hard work and we appreciate our community leaders for stepping up to address Portland's environmental and climate challenges and injustices.
Oregon State Legislature
We welcome applications for endorsement in your campaign for State Representative or State Senate in Oregon. Please fill out this 2024 Sierra Club Oregon Chapter State Legislative Questionnaire. For priority consideration in advance of the August 29th Voter Pamphlet Statement due date, we request responses by Monday, August 19th at 11:59pm. We do not anticipate conducting interviews and intend to make our endorsement decisions based off of questionnaire responses.
Candidates running for Oregon Attorney General are invited to respond to this questionnaire by August 19th.
Federal Candidates
Please fill out and return this questionnaire by Monday, August 12th in order to be eligible for endorsement consideration in time for the August 29th deadline for inclusion in the Oregon Voter Pamphlet Statement. Send your completed questionnaire to PoliticalCommittee@oregon.sierraclub.org.
Our Oregon Chapter state executive committee will vote on our endorsements for Congress, then the national Sierra Club Board of Directors votes to finalize our recommendations.
