Intern Insights: Springing into the Portland Clean Energy Fund campaign!

The past month has been a whirlwind of introductions and hard work! When I first came on board as the Chapter’s Portland Clean Energy Fund Campaign Organizer, I had a basic idea of the various needs I would be supporting this summer. Over the past few weeks, I have learned more than I could have ever imagined about the inner-workings of a campaign. First and foremost, I owe much of my initial progress to everyone’s willingness to dedicate their time to explain the initiative and the process of petitioning. I now know that successful political campaigns require an artful balance of communication, collaboration, and creativity.
Communication has been the most essential part of my role. My daily tasks contribute to the continuous chain of communication, from the campaign coalition to signature gatherers, to the general public, and to potential volunteers. I’ve created a new webpage for the campaign, taken photos at events, and am regularly updating the various social media platforms to get the word out about this initiative In just under a month, it has become clear how important the element of clear and positive communication is in the success of campaigning.

There’s a unique spirit of collaboration I’ve noticed within both the Sierra Club office and the coalition working on this campaign (which also includes Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon, Audubon Society of Portland, Coalition of Communities of Color, Columbia Riverkeeper, NAACP Portland, Native American Youth & Family Center, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, Verde, and 350PDX.) The level of respect and care that these team members uphold throughout the campaign process is truly inspiring to witness. From working at both a law firm and on Capitol Hill, I am used to more individually-focused and competitive environments. Here, our meetings begin with thoughtful check-ins, where we share what support we need and what we did over the weekend. I appreciate the collaborative nature that is the Sierra Club and this entire campaign.
I was perhaps most surprised to notice how essential the element of creativity is during a political campaign. With so many moving parts, team members are constantly on their toes, problem-solving with spontaneity and creative thinking. I would have never considered creativity to be such an essential component of a campaign without this first-hand experience. From popular Portland restaurants to bustling concert venues, the volunteer coordinators are constantly brainstorming new avenues through which to gather signatures. The Communications Team is always thinking of new ways to increase our outreach on social media. It has become clear that each component of this ballot initiative campaign requires a lot of creative thinking, which certainly makes my position here enjoyable.
I am so excited about the work I’m able to do with the Oregon Chapter this summer!  From trainings to gathering signatures outside brunch spots and Thorns games, to the initial Portland Clean Energy Fund launch party, I’ve attended many engaging events in just one month! I’ve met countless intriguing activists who share a passion for the core values at the heart of this organization, and I leave the office inspired on a daily basis. Want to join me in feeling inspired every day? Volunteer for the campaign! With five weeks left to ensure we get on the November ballot, we are well on our way, but we can’t do it without more help. Sign up here today to join me.
