The Sierra Club's reason for devoting time, money and people power to electoral politics is simple. We value candidates who also value environmental protections, the fair democratic public process, public health based scientific standards for everyone, a fair and equitable transition to a clean energy economy and addressing the climate crisis. When we help a strong environmental candidate win, we have an ally to work with, rather than an adversary to lobby.
The national leadership of the United States has failed to effectively address and deal with the Global Climate Crisis. We have a unique advantage in New Hampshire; as the first-in-the-nation presidential primary, there is intensive national media focus on the candidates. Every four years, we have the opportunity to define climate and environmental issues, and ensure each candidate engages with those issues. 2020 was no different. We had active engagement for every candidate and found a variety of approaches from each.
The NH Sierra Club chapter leverages the national spotlight to bring our environmental and equity issues for public discussions and presidential debates by engaging strategically and persistently with all viable presidential candidates. The state level elected leaders need our engagement so they better understand the issues facing our environment, communities, and equity challenges in our state.
