Montgomery County Sierra Club applauds the Montgomery County Council for enacting today legislation that will move the county forward in addressing both the planet's climate emergency and the county's affordable housing crisis!
Today's 9-0 vote (ZTA 19-01) relaxes zoning provisions that have restricted the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in the county. Because these units are small, they will generally be affordable. It is expected that many new ADUs will be located within walking distance of transit stations; for the climate, this is the best location for new housing, enabling residents to use their cars less often for daily and weekly trips.
Sierra Club has proudly testified in favor of this legislation over recent months. Be sure to thank your Council members! A special shout-out to Councilmember Hans Riemer, who spearheaded this effort!
