ANNAPOLIS, MD – Today the Governor announced plans to dedicate $90 million to the implementation of Maryland’s climate goals as part of the administration’s 2024 fiscal budget. The decision comes weeks after the release of Maryland's Climate Pollution Reduction Plan, which included bold recommendations as to how the state will achieve 60% greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2031 and net-zero emissions by 2045. In response to this initial funding Sierra Club Maryland Chapter Director Josh Tulkin has released the following statement:
“The allocation of $90 million is indicative of the Governor’s commitment to finding climate solutions that will ensure a brighter and healthier future for Marylanders. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time and everyday we are witnessing its impacts.
Maryland has important work ahead. This investment is an important first step, demonstrating what we are capable of when we come together. This funding will be allocated to key areas that will help the state meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals, including building electrification, electric school buses, and EV charging infrastructure. We look forward to working with the Governor and the legislature to achieve our ambitious climate goals.”
