Salisbury City Council voted 5-0 to approve the Comprehensive Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance on November 28, 2022!
A huge congratulations to the Sierra Club volunteer leaders Cindy Dillon, Susan Olsen, and Christina Hulslander who started this legislative advocacy by presenting to the Salisbury Sustainability Team in July of 2021. Many partners and allies such as SurfRider and the Salisbury University Environmental Students Association have joined us in this community-wide effort to raise the concern about plastic bag pollution.
Plastic bags float away in our waterways and damage our environment and harm the wildlife we love. Potential health risks to humans from the chemicals released during plastic breakdown include cancer, neurotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and impairment of the immune system. Being made from fossil fuel byproducts, plastic bags are also contributing to climate change, which we are already seeing the effects of on our coastal region.
A lot has happened since that evening in July, and their work isn't done, as the rollout will be over the next 6 months.
Please consider being part of the Lower Eastern Shore Sierra Club volunteer team helping with educational opportunities to ensure the citizens and merchants of Salisbury are fully informed prior to July 1st. Once we know exactly what is needed, there will be training. Let us know if you're interested by reaching out and checking our calendar for team meetings.
This is a big accomplishment! Three cheers for Salisbury!
