Meet Our Summer 2019 Interns

Every season the Maryland Sierra Club welcomes a new group of interns to help us with our important work of protecting the environment.  Here are our Summer 2019 interns!

Angela Scafidi

Angela Scafidi, Energy

Angela is from Ellicott City, MD and is a rising junior at New York University; she is majoring in Environmental Studies and Romance Languages. Here she is after a day of hiking in the Smoky Mountains on a trip she took this summer! Angela loves hiking, going to concerts, and hanging out with friends. Although she’s not entirely sure what career path she wants to take, she has always been interested in policy and wants to explore how state and local level politics works.

 

Maria Janush, Communications and Water Intern

Maria is from Laurel, MD and is a rising senior at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is majoring in Government and Politics & Public Policy. She loves reading on the beach, hiking with family and friends and going on road trips! Here she is pictured visiting Lake Michigan last summer. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club because she is interested in environmental policy and working with nonprofits. She is looking forward to learning more about the campaigns and making a difference in the fight for the environment!

 

Maia Caddle, Outings Intern

Maia is from Gloucester, MA and is a rising senior at the University of Maryland, College Park studying Psychology and Sustainability Studies. She is pictured here holding a crocodile while studying environment and wildlife conservation in Australia this past summer. After graduating, Maia plans to work for a few years in the environmental non-profit sector before going to graduate school in Australia. She is excited to intern with the Sierra Club and in order to gain first hand experience in ensuring a more sustainable future for the planet.

 

Sophia Kelleher, Beyond Coal Intern

Sophia is from Bethesda, Maryland and is going into her junior year at Lesley University, Cambridge MA. Majoring in Political Science, and minoring in Environmental Studies, the goal is to work with environmental policy and politics. She loves traveling and hopes to travel nonstop for her future jobs and her profession in the future. Sophia is excited to intern with the Sierra Club, observe the operation of a grassroots organization, and to join the fight for the environment.   

 

Heather Merrifield, Stewardship and Outings Intern

Heather is from Muncy, Pennsylvania and a senior at Loyola University in Baltimore where she runs track and is studying Environmental and Sustainability Studies, History, and Spanish, aiming to pursue a career in environmental nonprofits or research in the Environmental field. She loves sports, her dogs, and anything that gets her out in the sunshine. This summer she is working with SC to protect Maryland's woods from invasive species and to promote information for the public on this subject. She believes that travel and the outdoors are essential to a happy life and is excited to work with the Sierra Club to learn about grassroots organizing, and contribute to the protection of our environment.

Grace Carroll, Stewardship Intern

Grace is a rising senior at St. Mary’s College of Maryland studying Environmental Studies and Economics.  She enjoys walking her dogs, hiking and going to the beach.  Here she is pictured canoeing at Lake Needwood last summer.  After graduation she hopes to be involved in analyzing and creating practical sustainable solutions to help the future health of our planet.  She is excited to work at the Sierra Club, and discover more about the operations of a grassroots organization.
