Hold Governor Hogan Accountable for Weakening Public Health Protections

Governor Hogan and his Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) have gutted a clean air plan that would have required Big Coal to clean up its act.

Back in January the Governor blocked publication of a common-sense pollution cutting plan that had the support from public health groups, environmentalists, and even Maryland coal plant owner Raven Power.

Governor Hogan said his administration's new plan would "provide equal or greater public health protections" than the original plan, but the Governor is breaking that promise, and we must hold him accountable. Hogan's new plan contains a big loophole that is expected to result in 21-35% more smog-forming pollution on peak bad air days.

The MDE is accepting public comments on weakened version of protections against coal pollution until October 23. Submit a comment today to let Governor Hogan and MDE know that you're paying to their broken promises to protect our health!

Over 5 million Marylanders live in counties that received a grade of D or F for smog pollution in the most recent State of the Air report from the American Lung Association. Meanwhile, our old, dirty coal plants still pump a lot of smog-forming pollution into the air, especially on peak summer smog days.

You can help hold Governor Hogan accountable by pressuring him to live up to his word. More than half of Maryland's coal units don't have modern technology for stopping smog-forming pollution and the Governor's new plan would continue to give them a pass. Maryland families deserve better. Our leaders should protect our health and we need to call on them to stay true to their promises and hold our coal plants accountable for their pollution.
