Celebrate the Wild!
60th Anniversary of the Wilderness ActBy David von Seggern
|
2024 has arrived and with it we have the sixtieth anniversary of the federal Wilderness Act that established America’s National Wilderness Preservation System. So it is time to begin celebrating sixty years of wilderness preservation in the United States. Sierra Club members should especially engage because of the Club’s long and effective history in the efforts to preserve wilderness areas in the U.S.
Maine has three designated wilderness areas: 1) Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness, 2) Moosehorn Wilderness, and 3) Moosehorn Wilderness (Baring Unit). The first is in southern Oxford County near the New Hampshire border; the second and third are in southeastern Washington County. Together they comprise nearly 20,000 acres of undeveloped land that is preserved forever under the Wilderness Act. More on these wilderness areas can be found on the informative flyer prepared by Vicki Hoover at the national Sierra Club office.
This year, in addition to local events throughout the nation, our nation’s wild places will be celebrated as part of the 12th World Wilderness Congress, taking place in Rapid City, South Dakota, on August 24 to 31, 2024. At least one full day will have a special focus on North American Wilderness. Continue reading here.

Climate Change in 2023 AcceleratedBy David von Seggern
|
Here is the most alarming chart I have seen in my following climate change for decades. This chart, which is updated daily, shows the mean global surface temperatures by day for every year since 1940.
It draws on datasets provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a European Union climate agency with perhaps the most sophisticated climate analysis tools.
Note the drift of the 2023 (orange) line compared to the historical mean lines, and compared to any previous year. Global warming in 2023 accelerated, principally after June 2023 and continued into 2024. The January 2024 temperatures are already starting off at roughly 0.3°C above the 2023 values. The scourge of global warming is upon us, and it is no wonder Maine has seen some of its worst winter storms less than a month into winter.
Please download this graph when you plan to talk to others about climate change, especially local and state officials. Be aware that there is a data delay of approximately one week. Other important information is available on the UMaine webpage for climate analysis. The urgency of action to prevent the worst effects of climate change becomes greater by the day.

Green Tip of the Month:
Find and Unplug Your Energy Vampires
By Michael Trombley, Sierra Club Maine Volunteer
|
These days, most of us have dozens of electrical devices and appliances in our homes. According to the Sierra Club, devices that draw power while they’re turned off can waste around $200 a year per household.
You might think it’s hard to know exactly how much electricity your devices use, but there’s an easy way to measure this. Even better, it’s often available for free. Most Maine libraries loan out simple, plug-in electricity monitors
that will show you how much energy a device is using, even when it’s turned off. All you have to do is plug the meter into your wall outlet, and then plug your device (like a computer, a coffeemaker, or a dehumidifier) into the meter. You might be able to cut down your usage significantly if you find out a device is constantly pulling a lot of power even when you’re not using it. Stop by your local library to try it out!
