Mission Statement
To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth;
To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources;
To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.
Sierra Club’s core Values, Grounded in Equity and Inclusion:
Anti-racism: We commit to shifting power away from white supremacy, repairing harm, and ending structural racism.
Balance: Our effectiveness comes from committing to caring for ourselves and others.
Collaboration: We believe in just relationships that support collective work.
Justice: We are accountable for our actions, our work, and how we show up with trust and respect.
Transformation: We commit to changing our relationships to power, privilege, and oppression—for ourselves and for the organization.
What we're talking about:
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation – Communities in our geographic location get their electricity mostly from coal and natural gas burning power plants. We advocate for more renewable energy and energy conservation strategies for individuals, businesses, and the public sector. We work with Metro Government, tree planting groups, Public Works, and MSD to encourage green roofs, permeable pavement and more.
Improvement of the Human Environment - Justice and Fairness issues are inseparable from the "environment." There can be no successful sustainability effort that doesn't include attention to Equity, Justice, and Inclusion.
Political Innovation - Our democracy is suffering from unfairness in the voting system. Millions of voters are unable to vote in primary elections because they choose not to join a major party. 80 to 90% of legislative districs are considered "safe" for the party in power and there is no incentive for incumbents to change. Legislative rules are highly structured by the major parties. But our Constitution leaves it up to state and federal legislative bodies to design voting and legislative rules and they CAN be changed. We want change.
Urban Development and Smart Growth – We take part in public meetings to advocate for preservation of rural and urban habitats, smart transportation, and access to all community natural areas for everyone, regardless of income level.
Activism – We collaborate with other like-minded organizations on local strategies, rallies, protests and events whenever there is a need for action.
