The Benefits and Challenges of Large Shade Trees in the Urban Yard
January 13, 2025 at 7:00PM
Please join us for Larry Figart, UF Extension Agent and ISA Certified Arborist, who will speak to us on Monday January 13 about the challenges and benefits of large shade trees in the urban yard. Trees provide a multitude of benefits for both the homeowner and the community including services sorely needed in a warming world such as cooling and cleaning the air, flood control and habitat for over 500 species. Yet, trees also need our help to prosper in the urban environment. Larry will speak to us on this and more, so please join us as trees make their case.

UNF Garden Tour and Cleanup (Part 2)
January 25, 2025 at 8:30AM
Join your Sierra Club and UNF’s Rhonda Gracie for a follow-up guided tour of a native plant garden and work day on the UNF campus. See for yourself how beautiful native plant gardens are as we learn about their benefits to wildlife.
After the tour, we will eliminate the invasive plants like Coral Ardisia in the forest, and other invasives in the bog where we are trying to protect the native pitcher plants. Coral Ardisia, and other invasive plants threaten native habitats and starve wildlife of food.
There is also the opportunity to plant native plants in the newest area of UNF to be rejuvenated. Afterwards from 11:00-12:00, Rhonda will treat participants to a wonderful lunch with optional kayaking available for those who are interested. It is a truly fun and gratifying experience.
