Victories for Florida's Environment

St. Petersburg endorsed candidates and Sierra Club staff

As the country continues to analyze last week's Election Day results, I wanted to make sure you saw the incredible news coming out of St. Petersburg, where the Suncoast Sierra Club group endorsed a slate of candidates in the municipal election for mayor and four council seats, and won every single race!

This is a significant victory for the people of St. Petersburg, who elected their first Black mayor, their first Hispanic council member, and an overall impressive slate of environmental champions. We look forward to working with them to deliver for the people of St. Pete.

We experienced another big win earlier this week when the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution committing the county to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2050. This succeeded thanks to the collaborative efforts of Sierra Club volunteers and staff, who mobilized the community to urge commissioners to make Pinellas the first county in Florida to join the clean energy movement.

These victories are the product of years of dedicated work from people like you. Across the state, many of you have worked tirelessly to identify, endorse, and elect environmental champions and to participate in campaigns to protect the environment and create a sustainable future.

Let's keep the momentum going! As we prepare for the challenges of 2022, we will continue to lean in, build relationships, mobilize our neighbors, and push forward in our fight for Florida's environment and its people. Even greater success is within our reach.

Can we count on you to do your part?
