I love to collect words, scattered across book pages, friends' mouths, and a glowing screen. Though my mind does not always understand their meaning or intent, my heart feels oddly spoken to. Attached are a few quotes I have collected over the past few days that spoke to me.
As I reflect on these words, I think about how hard it is to be human within the systems and structures that we have been forced into. To watch (and fight) as places sacred to us or our kin are desecrated. To be on constant defense against massive powers given the right of ways to pillage the land. To be criminally charged for practicing ways of life our ancestors have for millennia. I could go on…
And yet, we persist because we love. Because we dig our hands in the soil and suddenly we remember everything they have tried to make us forget. We can feel who we are meant to be and what we are supposed to do. Our hope for a more loving world becomes untamable. This place, “Northern Arizona,” is who we are, and we will fight with everything we have to protect her. To do work that is real. To do work that is human. To truly belong to place. To choose here, and have a reason to be chosen back.
Here's to hope and belonging.
