Welcome to Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter -- we encourage you to get involved with us! !
 
Sierra Club is one of the oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States.
 
The Grand Canyon Chapter seeks to engage its members and the public in protecting our communities; public lands, including national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges; rivers and streams; and wildlife -- as well as the people and communities who depend on them. We work to protect Arizona’s wild places, wildlife, and waters.  We also work to promote clean renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to global climate change -- as well as supporting transit, bike, and pedestrian resources in communities (to reduce air pollution and energy use).
 
In addition, we are the only environmental organization in Arizona that maintains a presence at the Arizona Legislature to advocate on the full spectrum of environmental issues affecting our state.

We engage in on-the-ground service by helping monitor water quality, sponsoring regular clean-ups, removing invasive plant species, and assisting with wildlife research and habitat restoration. We also have a strong hiking program, including an Inspiring Connections Outdoors program in both Phoenix and Tucson to engage youth in outdoor exploration.
 

Mission

Sierra Club’s mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

History and Background

The Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter was formed in 1965 in order to focus attention on stopping dams in Grand Canyon. Our work to protect the Colorado River and Grand Canyon National Park continue today and have been joined by a number of programs to safeguard other areas and issues. The Grand Canyon Chapter has a Restore and Protect the Grand Canyon Ecoregion project, a Water Sentinels program that focuses on protecting the Verde and San Pedro rivers and engaging people in watershed restoration and protection, plus a Borderlands project. Our chapter has long been engaged in protecting Arizona’s public lands – national forests; local, state, and national parks; wildlife refuges; Bureau of Land Management lands; and more.

Priorities

  • Border — Protect Arizona’s sensitive borderlands and wildlife
  • Energy — Promote energy efficiency and the production and use of renewable energy
  • Grand Canyon — Restore and protect Grand Canyon & the greater Grand Canyon ecoregion.
  • Public Lands — Protect Arizona's public lands including parks, wildlife refuges and monuments.
  • Water — Protect Arizona’s water resources and disappearing riparian areas.
  • Wildlife — Protect Arizona’s native wildlife with special emphasis on sensitive, threatened and endangered species.

Legislative

One of the few environmental protection voices at the Arizona Capitol, the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter seeks to stop environmentally harmful legislation and promote bills to improve our air quality, protect our water, and encourage renewable energy and more efficient use of energy via bills. Each year we provide weekly legislative updates when the legislature is in session and an end of session Environmental Report Card to provide accountability for both the legislature and the governor.
