After more than 13 years with Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter as our Grand Canyon Program Manager, Alicyn Gitlin has moved on to new adventures. We want to thank her for her effective and powerful leadership and strong advocacy for Grand Canyon and the Colorado Plateau, the Colorado River, the San Francisco Peaks, and for our native plants and animals. Alicyn was instrumental in helping to get a new monument established, stopping harmful development, and to fighting the harmful Pinyon Plain (aka Canyon) Mine (See below to take action on that.)
Alicyn formed strong relationships and partnerships with a broad range of organizations and individuals and centered Indigenous communities in her work in the region. She organized and helped organize numerous events and actions and worked collaboratively in these and all of her work, listening to and following the lead of the people most affected.
We wish Alicyn all the best with her future endeavors and look forward to staying in touch and continuing to learn from her.

Welcome Mattea!
Our New Grand Canyon Champion.
|
On March 18th, Mattea Goetz (they/them) joined our Grand Canyon Chapter team as the new Grand Canyon Program Manager. They have begun the onboarding process which includes familiarizing themselves with Sierra Club systems, meeting staff and volunteers, and learning more about the key issues in the region.
Mattea brings a wealth of knowledge, particularly in working with volunteers and frontline communities, especially Indigenous activists and Tribes. Their honors thesis focused on "Decolonizing our Relationship with the Land; The Relationship between National Parks and the Colonization of Indigenous People." They have also worked extensively on food systems issues, served as the Tribal Community Engagement Fellow for Grand Teton National Park, and most recently, acted as the Colorado River Basin Semester Co-Coordinator with Groundwork, Colorado.
We are thrilled to welcome Mattea to our team!
You can reach Mattea at mattea.goetz@sierraclub.org. |
Safeguard Grand Canyon’s Water:
Take Action to Shut Down the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine

|
For several decades, Tribal leaders and environmental advocates have been fighting a proposed uranium mine that threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai. The mine, originally named Canyon Mine and now renamed as Pinyon Plain Mine is within the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument and the Red Butte Traditional Cultural Property. In January, after a jump in uranium prices, the mining company started to pull ore from the mine. We continue to fight. Please work with us and Indigenous leaders to help close Pinyon Plain uranium mine.
This mine threatens to pollute the groundwater that feeds the seeps and springs in Grand Canyon, supporting plants, animals, and people.
Take action and sign this petition!
We will bring our collective voice to Governor Hobbs and the Biden Administration!
